Oprah Can't Save Obama

September 11, 2007 / by thinline

The Philadelphia Inquirer says, historically, celebrity endorsements have never served up the margin of victory.

Yet, megastar Oprah Winfrey thinks things can be different now that she's signed on as one of Barack Obama's major bankrollers, an ex-officio campaign cheerleader, and celebrity marketer. After all, how could millions of voters refuse a command from the closest thing to America's Earth Mother to back Obama? It's simple. Almost no one pays any attention to what celebrities have to say about politicians. A September Newsweek poll removed any doubt about that. Barely 3 percent of respondents said a celebrity endorsement had any influence on whom they voted for.

Posted an hour ago, The Rasmussen Report daily tracking poll confirms the Philadelphia Inquirer.  Despite Oprah’s California money pit belching out $3 million this weekend and everybody knowing for weeks that Oprah is standing by her man, Obama remains in critical condition with John Edwards closing the gap.

There is little change in the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. New York Senator Hillary Clinton attracts 41% of the vote from Likely Democratic Primary Voters. Barack Obama is the top choice for 20% while John Edwards attracts 17% (see recent daily numbers). New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is a distant fourth at 4%.

Loser.  That reminds me, the New York Times quoted former campaign manager Dan Shomon as saying that Obama does not "like to lose." Too bad. Get used to it.

Thank you for writing Alfredo. I think Oprah has done herself a great disservice. And when Obama crashes and burns, which he surely will, she will look a lot less popular, at least less persuasive than she thought she was...or than her audience thought she was.
