Obama's Exit Strategy

September 27, 2007 / by thinline

So, the EXIT STRATEGY has begun. And no one is blaming you.  This is really quite genius. Finally, the Boys Club earned a day’s pay. Perfect. Have Michelle set up the scenario: if you don’t win in Iowa, the whole campaign is just too hard on her and the girls, and you cannot stay out and play anymore, you have to go home now. Perfect.

And not new. This is a tried and true strategy. Word on Wabash is that one Friday during the 2004 senate race, the whole campaign went into lock down because Michelle had just had enough.  But since you were running against Alan Keyes and losing was not even a remote possibility, Michelle was reeled back in rather quickly. But in this case, you can say, gee, my family needs me….as much as I would like to continue swimming upstream, I am going to go home where I am needed.

Genius.

MSNBC reporting:

But Michelle Obama did not, in fact, say "it's over." What she did tell supporters (and we have it recorded) is, “Iowa will make the difference. If Barack doesn’t win Iowa, then it's just a dream. If we win Iowa, then we can move to the world as it should be. And we need your help in making that happen. If we win Iowa, then we can move to the world as it should be. And we need your help in making that happen."

The gist is the same -- Michelle Obama clearly implied that a poor showing in the state means the end of the road for Obama. And saying, "win" instead of the usual moderate-expectation-setting "do well," is significant. But the ultimatum of "it's over" was not uttered.

ASK OBAMA TO END IT QUICKLY
