Now that Obama is planning his EXIT STRATEGY,

and not a moment too soon, one has to question how he came to be at the edge of this political cliff, a fall from which may mean the end of his political career.  Word on Wabash is that Senator Dick Durbin encouraged Obama to run.  Dick Durbin is plenty smart. Why would he do that?

ThinLine does not generally engage in pure speculation pieces, but since a number of readers asked me WHY do I think Obama got himself into this mess….well…here goes…

Obama seeks and often follows the counsel of others, particularly if it is flattering.

Before Obama, Dick Durbin was the big man on the Illinois campus. He was Minority Whip and now, well, Majority Whip.  At a DSCC bash in 2003, there were Democratic Party heavy weight generated rumors that Dick Durbin might be headed for the VP spot on the Democratic ticket if not in 04, maybe 08, but some time soon for certain.

But then along comes Obama and the ensuing phenomenon that, based on the Illinois showing, was not entirely unpredictable. What would that mean for Dick Durbin’s White House plans? What could Dick Durbin do to look loyal and supportive but at the same time push Obama out of the way?

Well, he could advise an ego driven, overly ambitious, inexperienced and unprepared Obama, to run for president knowing he would be crushed by Hillary, knowing that his choosing to do so and predictable arrogant behavior would crush any chance of Obama being part of a Hillary Clinton Administration, knowing campaign dirt on Obama would rise to the surface, and knowing that Obama would miss so many votes while out on the campaign trail that his senate seat would be in jeopardy in 2012 as he is cast for what he was, MIA.

Poof. Gone. Game over.
